THE SINGING FAMILY FROM SALZBURG

A children’s book about the story of the Trapp family offers a fascinating read for both children and adults.

When Margret Springl, a native of Salzburg, wrote the children’s book “The Singing Family from Salzburg” in 2006, she had no idea what an impact the book would have.

“I originally wanted to write the Trapp family’s life story for my daughter, who was seven at the time, after I had read Maria von Trapp’s autobiography,” explains author Margret Springl. Gradually, the author began telling the story to other children as well and noticed that many children and adults were unfamiliar with the famous story of the singing Trapp family from Salzburg. This is how the children’s book came about; it was published in other languages in 2014/15 and seems to have become firmly established in the minds of the people of Salzburg ever since.

Educational value

In addition to simple sentences, many of which are suitable for children, the book also features numerous child-friendly illustrations of the locations and information on Salzburg’s historical significance, making it a valuable resource for tourists as well. The appendix of the book also includes contemporary photographs, maps and much more.

But Margret Springl’s children’s book is also ideal as a resource for schools, as the author has encouraged children to draw and make references,” says Margret Springl, whose book also features a dedication from Johannes von Trapp.

The book is primarily aimed at children aged 6 and over, and was also available in a trilingual edition (German, English, Chinese) in 2014/15.

But Margret Springl’s children’s book is also ideal as a location-based reading resource for schools, as the author believes ‘children are meant to draw and explore’, says Margret Springl, whose book also received a dedication from Johannes von Trapp.
