The Echo of ‘The Sound of Music’: A Legend Returns Home to Salzburg, Austria – As the Name ‘The Sound of Music’ Gains Increasing Prominence.

SALZBURG. For some time now, the legend of “The Sound of Music” has been returning home to Salzburg. Visitors from all over the world come not only for the original locations of the Hollywood film “The Sound of Music” (“My Songs – My Dreams”), but also for the associated patrician houses scattered throughout the city.
The ‘street kids’ among the guests who love the film are flocking here in droves. St. Gilgen and other filming locations, as well as the Trapp family’s real home in Aigen, are popular. Villa Trapp is now used as a hotel and museum.

Salzburg-born Margarete Springl has written a children’s book about the Trapp family. ‘The Trapp Family’ (originally ‘The Singing Family from Salzburg’) tells the true story on which the film is based in a child-friendly way.
Myths and Reality The myth lives on: visitors flock to the film locations – from the Mirabell Gardens to the Nonnberg. However, the film’s original plot differs from reality in many respects.
Maria was not a novice, but already a governess; Baron von Trapp was not strict with the children, but rather indulgent. The family did not flee to the mountains, but to Italy and later to the USA.
Today’s focus Families from all over the world are interested in the locations. Villa Trapp in Aigen (now a hotel) is a hotspot. More and more visitors are coming for the real Trapp legacy – not just because of the film.
About the book: Margarete Springl originally wanted to write a book for her daughter. This became a 23-page children’s book (for ages 6–8 and up) that combines the Salzburg locations with the true family story. It was self-published in 2006 and features beautiful illustrations.
The film “The Sound of Music” (1965) starring Julie Andrews made the Trapp family world-famous – its legacy still resonates in Salzburg today.
